Ein Tribute-Song sollte möglichst auf das Werk des geehrten Künstlers Bezug nehmen. Hier dienten die teils kryptischen Texte der UK-Alben als Inspiration (bevor John Wetton bei Asia erstmals die Ich-Form wählte) – man beachte das Zitat nothing to lose. Hintergrund ist Eddie's Mitte der 80er getroffene Entscheidung, in die USA zu gehen und Filmmusik zu produzieren (bluescreen desires!), nachdem die Rockszene der 70er Jahre abgewirtschaftet hat (u. a. the party's over). Er will es allein schaffen (goin' it alone). Gleichzeitig aber auch ein Appell an den Meister, endlich wieder mal ein Album zu veröffentlichen – du schaffst es allein, Eddie!

A tribute song should refer to the work of the honoured artist. In this case the sometimes cryptic lyrics of the UK-albums were used as an inspiration (before John Wetten chose the first person for the first time when he started writing songs for Asia) – note the phrasing nothing to lose. Primarily the song is about Eddie's decision to emigrate to the US and produce soundtracks for TV-series, movies and commercials (bluescreen desires!), when the once flourishing 70's rock-scene was about to die (the party's over etc.). He's going it alone – that's also a hidden demand for a new album that many of his fans probably would die for...

TRIVIA:

Abgesehen von ein paar Jugendsünden habe ich nie Lyrics geschrieben, die sich mit Dingen wie Mädchen anbaggern, Auto fahren oder den Freuden des Verliebtseins befassten. Meine Texte handelten immer von problematischen oder gescheiterten Beziehungen, Ängsten, Neurosen und dem "ganz normalen Wahnsinn" im Allgemeinen – meist mit einem Schuss Sarkasmus oder einer Prise Ironie versehen. Als Vorbilder dienen mir u. a. Lou Reed und Steely Dan, die einen "fiktiven Erzähler" ins Spiel bringen. Wenn es hier also einmal heißt: "Mir geht's schlecht, bin so verdammt einsam, mein Bausparvertrag kann mich nicht trösten..." – das bin dann nicht ich, okay? PS

Apart from a few juvenile transgressions I never have written lyrics about hitting on girls, driving a car, or the joy of falling in love. Most of my lyrical attempts deal with problematic or gone by relationships, fears, neurosis and the ordinary madness in general – often with a shot of sarcasm or a pinch of irony. Like Lou Reed and Steely Dan (I'm far from comparing myself with these outstandig artists) I use a fictional narrator who tells "his" story. So if you read lines like "I''m feeling sick, I'm lonely as hell, I give a f*** about my home savings plan..." – that's not me, ok? PS
